Handle With Care Behavior Management System® is the life’s work of founder Bruce Chapman.  Established in 1984, Handle With Care® (“HWC”) is committed to helping organizations create and maintain safer environments.  HWC's core philosophy is premised upon the belief that there is no dignity in allowing a child or adult to hurt himself or someone else, and has dedicated itself to the reduction of institutional and workplace violence through the use of preventative actions that result in a decrease in the need for the use of physical restraint.

Earning a reputation for teaching the most powerful verbal and physical methods in the history of the industry, Handle With Care has created safer human service environments in over 1000 organizations and schools in all 50 states and internationally.  We can confidently say that HWC is often the only crisis intervention and behavior management training vendor with an intervention system that has the safety, power and versatility to adapt to the unique demands of every consumer or student in your care.

HWC’s program is fully documented in a Participant’s Manual, Instructor’s Manual, Power Point and Video.

Handle With Care's program is used by JCAHO accredited and Medicare/Medicaid participating facilities, and complies with JCAHO policies, CMS regulations and HHS rulings regarding safety and restraint.  HWC's founder, Bruce Chapman regularly provides consultations, answers and advice on the entire spectrum of behavior management, crisis intervention and restraint.  Bruce is qualified as an expert on such topics as the proper and improper use of physical and therapeutic (mechanical) restraint, unarmed use-of-force and self-defense.

SoftCircle Client Protection Products are the natural extension of Handle With Care and are the result of over 30 years of direct hands-on experience managing dangerous behavior. Visit the product side of our site for more information.

We offer training for those agencies using therapeutic (mechanical) restraint on how to transition from manual to mechanical restraint

Handle With Care's training program consists of verbal de-escalation (including theoretical models and role plays) and nonviolent physical intervention.

Verbal de-escalation: HWC emphasizes using verbal de-escalation skills and the power of your relationship to defuse conflict.  Staff will learn how to recognize verbal and non-verbal cues and how to respond with productive, skillful and appropriate intervention.  HWC teaches staff how to identify, recognize and manage their own anxieties, stressors and emotions when dealing with conflict. The program integrates two models created by HWC's founder, Bruce Chapman:

  • (1) The Tension/Tension Reduction Cycle (T/TRC), which is used to “time” verbal and physical intervention modes to escalation and de-escalation tension, and
  • (2) The Solid Object Relationship Model (SORM), which is based on the observation that a person in crisis will attach himself to a more solid object to regain stability. The verbal program teaches staff how to become that solid object.

Physical Intervention: The centerpiece of Handle With Care's physical program is our proprietary holding method, the Primary Restraint Technique® (PRT).  The PRT has always been a standing hold first and foremost and there is not a more mechanically effective standing hold anywhere within the realm of passive and benign restraint than a standing PRT.  The PRT in the neutral (prone) position is the only physical technique in history to be granted several patents specifically for our ability to eliminate chest compression and the possibility of positional asphyxiation during our prone holding method.  HWC also offers a seated hold for small children and a proprietary two person face up (supine) hold.

The PRT when used with its constellation of safeguards has never been implicated in a catastrophic event with over a million (plus) estimated applications across every field of human services.  HWC is considered by many to be the most carefully engineered and powerful physical restraint technology in the world.
